Sloshy Mud but it is almost SPRING!
Ok, so we had enough winter in one storm here in KY that we don’t need any more for about – well, a decade, I think! We had about seven extra people her for many days and it was so fun. Then the ICE COLD WEATHER hit and I am so ready for SPRING! The great thing about KY weather is that you get a lot of great days no matter what the season is…so today, after a week of frigid weather, we are melting like crazy and it is about 60 degrees! It is giving me the gardening itch. I’ve been reading several really great books (The Square Foot Garden and The Vegetable Gardener’s Bible) and I am so ready to be out digging in the clay, trying to coax a few seeds to sprout!
My fabulous, organically-gifted brother suggested I buy Heirloom Seeds this year. (These seeds grow vegetables with seeds you can KEEP and dry, and plant the next year!) I know, you are thinking, “I thought all vegetables had those kind of seeds”. Well, they used to – but now with all the Genetic Modification (very bad thing by the way) they do not all produce usable seeds! Anyway, I got my seeds during the frigid cold week. I am so excited to use them! In fact, I may start a few in my “shed” and get a jump on the growing season!
I am currently trying to convince my handy-husband, and gifted-son to build me a composter. I want the Red Wiggler Worms to chew up my vegetable waste and make me some compost!
I’ll keep you all posted on the progress of the garden-effort. Since I really do not have a green thumb…it will depend highly upon the fact that God will be responsible for it’s success as it will be OUTSIDE where He can warm it with the sun and water it with the rain.
Ha!
I hope you all are warm, healthy and enjoying our second month of 2009!
