Missing my big kids and so thankful for my wonderful family

When Ben and I decided not to stop at just one child – it was a truly inspired decision!  I can’t even IMAGINE our lives right now if Zach were gone and that was all we had for kids!  I’ll admit, the original family plan was only four…but somehow after the first four it didn’t seem like the family picture was complete so we went on to have the last two bonus kids and WOW am I ever glad we did!  Last week was “Camp Feinn” here…the two youngest went to not one, but two VBS programs – one in the morning, one in the afternoon.  Since anything is always more fun with a friend, we had two other children here with us for most of the week so they could also go to VBS.  I would drop everyone off in the morning, go home, get lunch started, do a little cleaning, pick everyone back up, take them all swimming, come home, put away all the wet towels and swim gear, make a snack, get them ready for VBS #2, drop them off, pick them up…fall into bed!  It made me realize how glad I was the quiver didn’t need 8 kids to fill it up and that it was full at 6!  It was really fun to see the kids so happy with being busy.  It was also a good week for me to be busy.  It was Abbey’s first week in Costa Rica and the hole with her gone into the big, wide world felt enormous!

I think I am beginning to understand how God feels about us.  He loves it when He sees us thriving in our “sweet spot” but He really wants us to include Him.  I find that my few minutes of Skype with either of the “big kids” goes a long way!  Finding a message in my email also helps tremendously.  I love it that they are  busy and serving the Lord but oh how very much I miss them!  If I didn’t spend time with the Lord each day, I would feel the same way about Him!

And my “Middle two?”…They also have been quite busy since school got out.  They have a new level of grime in their two-day-a-week-job, they are busy with friends and are also contributing to taking my mind off the two holes at the dinner table.  In fact, Isaac, with his quick wit, really does live up to his name – that meaning “laughter”.  Last week we had packed the pick-up truck so full of stuff to take to a storage shed nearby that Josh had to literally ride pressed against the dashboard of the truck!  En route I was telling the boys a story I had read on the Internet which I thought would interest them.  Apparently I misjudged that as neither of them had one word to say about it.  Suddenly Isaac broke the silence with his dry sense of humor.  He said, “Wow, Mom, that story is so amazing it has Josh sitting on the edge of his seat!”  I laughed so hard  I could hardly drive!  (not a good thing when your kid is pressed against the  airbag!)  It made me so grateful we have all these wonderful children.  God has been so amazingly wonderful to me!
